Neerody

Neerodi is known to be south-west region of Kollemcode and it is a tail end of coastal places which shares Tamilnadu and Kerala border. The place called South Kollemcode is situated very near to Neerodi is part of Thiruvananthapuram District. It is a place blessed with the picturesque of the coastal areas.


Very remarkable peculiarity of this place is that the point where the sea and lake join together is situated very near to this place, and only because of that, the tourism is growing rapidly year by year.

The name, Neerodi is said to be formed from the meaning, ‘Detached from sea shore’ otherwise ‘Freed from Water’ or ‘Neer Odi’ (in Malayalam& Tamil). There is no any strong proof on this argument. Like any other places of south Kerala, this place also got majority of population from Christiantiy. As soon as the Portuguese people started ruling this place, the people of this place were urged to be converted into Christian. Thereafter, the religious conversion conducted by St. Xaviour made this place totally a Christian converted place.


Fishing is the main source of income here. Majority of the people involved in fishing as well as the work associated with the fishing for their livelihood. Most of the young generation before completing their preliminary education, they come out with a helping hand for their parents in fishing. Owing to that, the literacy of this place is being come down from the average literacy of Kollemcode. 


The St. Nicolas Church situated near the sea shore is the main worship centre here.


St. Nicolas Higher Secondary School and St. Francis Computer Centre are the important educational institutes here. Apart from that, a nursery school is also being operated at this place. Politically, AIADMK got strong support here; however, CPM and Congress are also exposing their strong appeal at this place.
